The book "The Crisis Caravan" by Linda Polman was the inspiration for this pseudo-documentary in the series Devilish Dilemmas of HUMAN. In her book, the investigative journalist comes to the painful conclusion that aid to the victims in war zones often doesn't work. Or, even worse, increasing the problems.
With a small Dutch crew we travelt to South Africa to make a film about two totally opposite aid workers. The Dutch Vincent, a successful businessman who wants to do good and the African Nkosi who knows because of his experience in the aid industry that a large part of the aid is lost through abuse. They are stuck with each other traveling through a war torn part of Africa. Their journey is not just a confrontation with violence and corruption, but also a confrontation with themselves. How far will go Vincent to fullfill his wish to help and how fatalistic can Nkosi be if he really wants to help the victims of oppression and violence?
Het boek 'De Crisiskaravaan' van Linda Polman was de inspiratie voor deze pseudo-documentaire in de reeks Duivelse Dilemma's van de HUMAN. In haar boek komt de onderzoeksjournaliste tot de pijnlijke conclusie dat hulp aan slachtoffers in oorlogsgebieden vaak niet werkt. Of, nog erger, de ellende alleen maar vergroot.
Met een kleine Nederlandse crew zijn we in Zuid-Afrika geweest om een film te maken over twee totaal tegengestelde hulpverleners. De Nederlandse Vincent, een succesvol zakenman, die zijn hart laat spreken en de Afrikaanse Nkosi die met zijn jarenlange ervaring in de hulpindustrie weet dat een groot deel van de hulp door misbruik verloren gaat. Ze zijn met elkaar opgezadeld als ze hulpgoederen willen brengen in een door burgeroorlogen verscheurd deel van Afrika. Hun reis wordt niet alleen een confrontatie met geweld en corruptie, maar vooral ook een confrontatie met zichzelf. Hoe ver wil Vincent gaan om zijn goede doel te bereiken en hoe fatalistisch kan Nkosi blijven, als hij de slachtoffers van onderdrukking en geweld wil helpen?
